Life in Guatemala
Guatemala is a geographically diverse country with tropical rain forests, mountains, volcanoes, lowland forests, and beaches. Although many people are farmers and raise crops such as coffee, sugar, and bananas for export, malnutrition is common. At least 23 percent of children in Guatemala are under weight for their age.1 For many, it is difficult to find work that pays enough to support a family, and over 50 percent of the population lives below the country’s poverty line. Many families cannot afford to send their children to school, and the literacy rate, at 73 percent, is among the lowest in Latin America.2 Health care is limited to one doctor for every 1,100 people, and many people suffer from easily preventable or treatable diseases.
